Marry before the sea rises

This project investigates the relationship between the impact of climate change and child marriage in Bangladesh. In the south of Bangladesh river erosion and sea level rising give rise to daily threaths, causing deepening poverty placing young girls in a vulnerable position.

People take the ferry to cross the Paira River in the south of Bangladesh, close to he Bay of Bengal. Sea level rising is threath many farmers face here, experiencing frequent floodings.
Zasim Uddim (23) and Shahanaz Begum (14) got married one month ago, after their family arranged their marriage. Shahanaz is too young to get married legally, so her parents arranged papers stating she is eighteen; the legal age for marriage for girls.
In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, heavy rainfall caused severe flooding all over the city in October. Locals said they’ve never seen this amount of rain in October before.
Soniya (15) is being covered with turmeric, a yellow herb. It is believed it gives your skin a glow. This is part of the ceremonial ritual ‘Gaye Holud’, a cleaning ceremony before a wedding.
